چکیده

As per the present available information, there is a discrepancy regarding the total number of exons present in MUC16 genomic DNA. This discrepancy is due to the absence/presence of some of the genomic sequences (particularly for the repeat regions) in the available genomic databases. The terminal nine exons on both 5' and 3' ends code for the aminoand carboxyterminal domains of MUC16, respectively. At the same time, it has been proposed that five consecutive exons code for a single repeat unit (SRU) of the central tandem repeat domain.

Expression of MUC1 and MUC2 mucin gene products in human ovarian carcinomas.

BACKGROUND Aberrations in expression of mucin glycoproteins have been observed during malignant transformation of human ovarian epithelium. To date, several secretory mucin genes designated the MUC gene family have been identified, of which MUC1 encodes a mammary-type and MUC2 an intestinal-type epithelial mucin. However, information on the expression and potential value of MUC1 and MUC2 mucins...

A novel mechanism of increased infections in contact lens wearers.

PURPOSE It is well documented that contact lens wearers have much higher incidences of corneal infections compared with those of non-contact lens wearers, although the exact cause(s) of this increased susceptibility has not been identified. A distinct subset of mucins (MUCs) is present on the ocular surface, acting to protect the integrity of the corneal epithelium. This study was performed to ...

Prognostic significance of MUC-1 expression in systemic anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

Systemic anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) frequently carries the t(2;5)(p23;q35) and overexpresses anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK). MUC-1, a highly glycosylated transmembrane protein, is detected in normal and malignant epithelial cells and has been associated with a poorer patient survival in various human malignancies. We have shown previously that MUC-1 is expressed as a consequence of...

High diversity in mucin genes and mucin molecules in Trypanosoma cruzi.

Mucins are highly O-glycosylated molecules which in mammalian cells accomplish essential functions, like cytoprotection and cell-cell interactions. In the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, mucin-related glycoproteins have been shown to play a relevant role in the interaction with and invasion of host cells. We have previously reported a family of mucin-like genes in T. cruzi whose overall s...

A cDNA encoding Tc-MUC-5, a mucin from Toxocara canis larvae identified by expression screening.

Toxocara canis is an ascarid nematode parasite of canids. Larvae infect a wide range of accidental hosts including humans, in whom they are the aetiologic agent of visceral and ocular Larva migrans. The labile surface coat of T. canis larvae consists of a family of mucin glycoproteins termed TES-120, for which the cDNAs have recently been cloned. In this paper, we describe the identification of...
